The Doctor didn't remember being such a wreck the first time he was a father, but Looming is quite different that this. Jack had been in pain and miserable and it killed him to see him that way.
But she was here now, their little River was here. He was watching Jack cuddle their little one, his eyes bright with unshed happy tears and a fond smile on his face.
This was his family. He had a family again. His heart clenched just thinking about it, he hadn't known how badly he'd wanted it, needed it, until this moment.
He sat down on the bedside next to Jack, fingers running lightly over her head.
Ginger.
All of his regenerations he'd wanted to be ginger, but it wouldn't have made him as happy as seeing his baby girl with ginger hair.
"She's beautiful, Jack. Thank you," he whispered, leaning down to kiss Jack's forehead. "Thank you for giving me a family again." Now his tears were threatening to spill over.
The Doctor looked at the baby, a proud smile on his face. "Oh, she's going to be fantastic, she is, absolutely brilliant."
He reached out a finger and the baby squeezed it tight as if in agreement.
