The day had started out nicely. Colleen had been part of a team working on a dig site to uncover a piece of lost history. Given she is an expert in Celtic history and mythology she had been a pretty important member of the team.
Some allowances had been made due to her bad leg and her pregnancy of course but it had been honestly fun working with this group and teaching some of the curious grad students.
Getting kidnapped by an alien version of the Wild Hunt hadn't been part of her agenda for the next few months. The Hunt's Man seems unwilling to loosen his grip on her in spite of the strange man who just... sort of showed up. Colleen has a feeling even if this alien lets her go it's only going to be the beginning of something very annoying.
She is correct on that. Somehow the mystery man in the grey coat rescued her by creating a distraction. Now they're trying to keep several steps ahead of the Wild Hunt. Colleen had been trying to figure out how many of them there were so she could come up with a plan. Especially since the Hunt's Man had seemed interested in her for some reason and Colleen is unwilling to speculate on why that might be. She'd rather stab the alien for bruising her wrists.
"Slow down please, I can't run," she hisses keeping her voice low as she ducks behind the trees. Colleen tugs her coat about her body more tightly. The wind out here is freezing and Colleen feels like her everything is sore. She still hasn't even introduced herself to the man with her. They're a bit busy trying to stay alive.
Jack was having one hell of a year. UNIT had fallen, Torchwood was gone,
companions were vanishing left and right and there was no one to protect
who was left. Trying to keep track of everything was wearing Jack out and
now the alien Wild Hunt was trying to collect the bounty on his head to
boot. He slows to a stop. "Sorry if this comes across rude, but how much do
you weigh?"
The very dead delivery on that had been a bit like Colleen was stunned. She wasn't sure why he would ask that. Possibly because she obviously is having trouble running.
"Around one hundred fifty five or so. I'm pregnant. I might have put on a bit more weight. My colleagues keep sneaking more food onto my plate." It was obvious that she was with that group of scholars.
Jack smiles. "Those are some great co-workers you have," he says warmly
remembering when he and Ianto did the same for Gwen while they were on the
run. Gods he missed those days. He holds out his hand. "Captain Jack
Harkness," he says, "I'm willing to carry you if that needs to happen."
"They were amazing to work with," Colleen agrees. "It was refreshing to work with an open-minded crew." She hadn't wanted to need to worry about who was there. Colleen actually had begun to make real friends. It's rare given the supernatural rage that is a part of her tends to make most people react as if she's dangerous.
Which she is just not to them.
"Doctor Colleen Malley," she returns managing to shake his hand mostly pain free. It was easy to see that the young looking doctor had had a hell of a day.
"I may need it. I'm partly crippled in one leg and.... several months pregnant." It wasn't just a thick coat to ward off the winter chill.
"He broke my cane. Shame. I really liked that one."
Jack shook his head and muttered something in an alien language about the
Hunt's mothers. "I know a guy who can make you a new one once we get out of
this mess," he says, "We just need to survive until sunrise. We do that and
we win the game and they'll at least let you go."
They steal children sometimes. Colleen doesn't know about this but these aliens of the Wild Hunt will learn no one takes the child of a Garou and lives.
She just doesn't know that's part of why they are interested in her.
"They're after you for something." Colleen isn't going to ask what. It seems private and she doesn't want to pry when tonight is about survival.
"I think we'll manage this. I just need to cover my hair up a bit. It's too red to hide well in winter... plus tonight's a full moon."
Her rage is high. She can feel the many thousands of generations of need to shed blood thudding in her veins. If it was just her she might ambush and kill these shit heels but with Jack she can't risk shifting. There are rules just as old as her rage.
"Might have pissed off the universe a touch," Jack replies, "bounty on my
head blah, blah, blah. I had a reason though..my friend was in danger and
needed me. So I stole a ship and went hunting.. Not sorry." Jack's tone is
firm. He would burn the world for the Doctor no matter what.
"Wasn't expecting to get paired with a werewolf though."
"That's legit," Colleen says after a moment of thinking it over. She had done stupider things before because of course she'd do crazy things for her friends.
The moon is full so Colleen has to suppress the urge to lash out. Being a werewolf is supposed to be a secret. Although the fact she just had to clamp down on her rage is a big clue.
"And you know this how?" Colleen goes from angry to nervous pretty fast. If he knows the Hunt must know.
Jack smiles. "Been around the block a bit," he says, "met alot of the
weirder people out there so I know what it looks like when the full moon
makes someone itchy and not in the good way. Sorry if I shouldn't have said
anything."
"It's nothing." Well that's a lie she sort of regrets already. "Okay. It's just... Here we are being chased by people who may try killing me. I'm also not used to strangers who aren't related to the community knowing."
She shrugs her shoulders very gently before holding up her hands.
"I can handle it though. The universe is a big place."
And some part of her says that Jack is someone she can trust. Wait. That's not her. Damn, the ancestors are strong tonight. Better not clue him into that.
Jack smiles. "I wouldn't have said anything if you didn't look as itchy as
you did. You don't need to be afraid to hurt me...I'm tougher than I look I
promise."
"I have fairly decent control. I'm just.... twitchier than usual," she admits after a long moment. Colleen is actually pretty good at controlling herself normally. This makes it much easier to use her abilities as a Garou for tactical purposes.
"I'm not used to my Rage feeling this potent even on a full moon. It's weird." She doesn't like it.
"Question....can phermones cause your Rage to "increase....because I give
off some pretty strong ones without really thinking about it. Part of my
genetic make up," Jack says
"No. I don't think that would necessarily be a trigger. My tribe can do something similar with our pheromones." She has to think about it for a moment then her mouth makes a tiny little 'o'.
"I'm such an idiot. This is the first time I've felt as if my children have been in danger. Of course I'm angry." She had already had to put up with the heartache of their father turning out to be the kind of man she wanted nothing to do with. Now this.
Stabbing someone feels like a great option tonight.
"Ah," Jack says getting the hint. Having been pregnant himself he
understand what she's going through. The same thing happened to him and he
nearly ripped Ianto's head off while trying to keep the Empresses child
safe. Biology can be a bitch sometimes when a child is under threat. "Got
it." He moves from his hiding place and body blocks her as he tilts his
head and tries to figure out where the Wild Hunt might be. His telepathic
abilities aren't super strong, but that coupled with the Vortex has given
him a weird sense about magic then most. "I think they are laying in wait
up ahead, but I can't be sure."
Pregnancy rage is a thing Colleen hadn't expected to have. She had no idea it would be this powerful but Colleen guesses she forgot the important part about this no one gets angry like a Mother does.
"Let me." Colleen tries to move around him easily but he had unintentionally or not blocked her in a corner. She brushes against him as she steps out and starts to sniff the air. She is trying to detect their pursuers.
The smell is hard to catch due to just where they are. Plus Colleen doesn't want to admit it but the aliens smell just different enough that smelling them is a bad idea for her stomach. The joys of Morning Sickness.
Jack hasn't been touched in such a casual way in a long time and it's odd
enough that he shivers for a second. "I'd stay we should move forward but
I'm worried we might be walking into an ambush...really not in the mood for
that."
Colleen can tell he just shivered and that just worries her for a second. She doesn't need to deal with any weird reactions. Hold it together please. Death and sex should only mix when celebrating not dying not while in the middle of being hunted.
"Just give me a minute. Werewolf thing. I might be able to pick up on where they are."
It must be weird to have the visibly pregnant woman taking point but frankly Colleen has no time to give any fucks. Ego and survival do not mix well.
Jack nodded and took a calm deep breath quietly calming his racing heart.
He wasn't starved for partners...he could find sex almost anywhere, but he
was starved for touch. It was one thing to have one night stand and another
to be touched simply because a human being wanted to touch him. "
Anything," he whispered quietly.
"Gods if I know," Jack says trying to plan out his moves. He has a feeling
he is about to die...a lot but he isn't above playing human shield if he
needs to to keep this woman and her children safe. "Do you have any dodging
room at all if I draw their fire?"
